Benue State Commissioner of Police, Cletus Nwadiogbu, has questioned the explanation provided by a group of Pakistani nationals intercepted in Otukpo, saying investigators were unable to establish a convincing reason for their presence in Benue State.
Speaking during an interview on AIT News on Sunday, 19 July, 2026, Nwadiogbu said the police carried out extensive investigations after the foreign nationals were discovered in a hotel in Otukpo. According to him, the suspects claimed they had travelled to Nigeria for business, but investigators found their explanation unconvincing.
Explaining why the police became suspicious, the commissioner said, “We studied and investigated them but we couldn’t find any reasonable reason that brought them to Nigeria in particular and to Otukpo. They were giving excuses that they came for business, they want to sell electronics, and they are looking for shop. They are looking for shop and they cannot understand English. How do you intend to do the business.”
Nwadiogbu said the inconsistencies in the explanations given by the foreign nationals prompted the police to intensify their investigation. He noted that officers carefully assessed their claims but were unable to verify any legitimate business activity or establish why Otukpo was chosen as their destination.
The commissioner added that the case was subsequently escalated to the Force Headquarters, where the suspects were transferred to Abuja for further investigation.
