The Senior Special Assistant on Media to the Governor of Delta State, Ovie Success Ossai, has expressed doubts over Peter Obi’s pledge to serve only one term if elected president in 2027, arguing that political realities and public pressure could make it difficult for the former Anambra State governor to keep such a promise.
Ossai shared his views in a Facebook post on Wednesday, July 15, 2026, where he questioned the credibility of Obi’s one-term commitment. According to him, Nigerian politics has shown that presidents who are constitutionally eligible for a second term are often encouraged by their supporters and political allies to seek re-election.
The media aide argued that it would be unrealistic to expect any president to resist such pressure, particularly when there is strong backing from political supporters and regional stakeholders.
Expressing his reservations, Ossai stated, “Everyone finds it hard to believe in Peter Obi’s one-term vow. There would be strong demands from his Igbo base for him to run for reelection if he were to become president. It is logical to assume that he would not resist that kind of pressure, given how easily he gives in to it.”
According to Ossai, the political expectations that often accompany the presidency would likely make it difficult for Obi to step aside after a single four-year term. He argued that supporters from the Southeast would probably encourage the former governor to seek another mandate if they believed his administration was performing well.
He also claimed that Obi has a tendency to respond to pressure from supporters, suggesting that such influence could play a role in any future decision regarding a possible second-term bid. However, Ossai did not provide specific examples to support that assertion.
The Delta State governor’s aide further argued that Nigeria’s political history offers little evidence that an incumbent president eligible for re-election would voluntarily leave office after only one term. He maintained that the country’s political environment generally favors incumbents seeking a second mandate.
According to Ossai, a one-term presidency may be difficult to sustain because political parties, supporters, and allies often view a second-term campaign as an opportunity to consolidate achievements and maintain political stability..See_More
