According to an interview on Channels Television, Senator Victor Umeh has urged Nigeria to adopt a tougher stance in its relationship with South Africa, insisting that the latter should avoid actions capable of straining ties with Africa’s most populous nation. He argued that the strong economic relationship between both countries makes mutual respect essential.
The Anambra senator stated, “If there is any country South Africa should be careful about provoking, whether we want to talk about respect or not, it is Nigeria.” He explained that South African businesses continue to enjoy enormous financial success in Nigeria while receiving fair treatment from Nigerians.
Highlighting the contributions of the Nigerian market, Umeh said, “DSTV is here raking in money. MTN is here raking in money. Standard Bank and Stanbic IBTC are here raking in money, and Nigerians are treating them with full dignity. They increase their subscriptions and we pay, they are making money and taking it out of this country. What are we taking out of South Africa?”
