They Thought I’d Follow Peter Obi; With Due Respect, He Does Not Own My Politics or Me – Datti Ahmed

Former Labour Party vice-presidential candidate, Datti Baba-Ahmed, has said his decision to run alongside Peter Obi in the 2023 presidential election was motivated by concern for both Obi and Nigeria rather than political allegiance.

According to a report by Punch on Wednesday, June 3, 2026, speaking during an interview, Baba-Ahmed revealed that Obi had approached three prominent politicians before the election, but none agreed to join him. According to him, he felt compelled to support Obi after seeing him struggle to find a running mate.

The former senator said he accepted the position because he believed Nigeria needed people willing to make sacrifices for the country’s future. However, he stressed that his support for Obi did not mean he was permanently tied to him politically.

Baba-Ahmed, who recently left the Labour Party for the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP), stated that he remains an independent politician and is free to make his own decisions.

He also questioned Obi’s decision to leave the Labour Party over its internal crisis, arguing that leadership disputes are common in political parties and can be resolved from within.

According to Baba-Ahmed, moving to another party does not guarantee an end to internal disagreements, as similar challenges exist across different political platforms.
