Lawyer and public affairs analyst Kenneth Okonkwo has outlined a comprehensive vision for Nigeria’s development, emphasizing region-specific strategies to unlock the country’s full potential. Speaking during an interview on Channels TV, Okonkwo proposed tailored interventions that leverage the unique advantages of each region while addressing longstanding infrastructural and security challenges.
Okonkwo stressed the need for a homegrown development model, highlighting the South-South region as a potential hub for tourism. Drawing comparisons with Asian island nations, he noted that Nigeria is richly blessed with natural resources that, if properly managed, could transform the region into a premier tourist destination.
He also expressed concern about Lagos State’s infrastructural deficits despite its position as Nigeria’s commercial capital. Pointing out the lack of basic amenities such as pipe-borne water and electricity, he described the city as needing a transformation akin to Dubai. “I want Lagos to be transformed to be the home for all, to be the gateway, to be a Dubai,” he said, citing the challenges faced by residents and even noting criticisms from a youth corper who described Lagos as a smelly city.
For the northern region, Okonkwo advocated harnessing its agricultural potential, emphasizing that the vast arable land could be developed to make the North a major agricultural powerhouse.
Security also featured prominently in his vision, with Okonkwo stressing that every Nigerian should feel safe enough to sleep peacefully at night and wake up energized in the morning.
He concluded with optimism about the country’s economic prospects, calling for strategies that would stimulate GDP growth by capitalizing on Nigeria’s resources and human capital.
