The World Health Organization has reported a cluster of hantavirus cases linked to the MV Hondius cruise ship, which departed Argentina in March 2026 and is currently anchored off Cape Verde.

According to WHO updates as of early May 2026, the outbreak involves several laboratory-confirmed cases, additional suspected cases, and three reported deaths.

Health officials identified the strain involved as Andes virus, a rare form of hantavirus known for its limited ability to spread between humans through close contact.

Most hantaviruses are transmitted from rodents to humans via inhalation of contaminated particles from droppings or urine and do not spread from person to person.

WHO data indicates that approximately five cases have been laboratory-confirmed, with others under investigation.
