Senator Osita Izunaso has called for urgent and decisive action in response to the continued xenophobic attacks on Nigerians and other African nationals in South Africa, stressing Nigeria’s historic role in supporting liberation struggles across the continent.
The lawmaker made the remarks during an interview on TV Platinum, where he expressed concern over what he described as a troubling pattern of hostility toward foreigners, particularly Nigerians, in South Africa.
Reflecting on Nigeria’s contributions to Africa’s development and stability, Izunaso said: “I know how much money, energy and resources we spent to restore South Africa from apartheid regime. I also recall the issue of ECOMOG some few years ago in Liberia and even in Ghana here. So we must take decisive action on issue of this nature.”
He referenced Nigeria’s role in dismantling Apartheid and its leadership in regional peacekeeping efforts through the ECOMOG missions in Liberia and Ghana. According to the senator, these sacrifices underscore why Nigeria cannot remain passive in the face of attacks on its citizens abroad.
Izunaso emphasized that the Federal Government must adopt stronger diplomatic and strategic responses to address the situation and ensure the safety of Nigerians living in South Africa and other countries.
