According to a report by Punch Newspaper on Sunday, April 26, 2026, the Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu, has stated that his approach to policing is rooted in a long-term vision he developed during his early years in the Nigeria Police Force.
He explained that his style of leadership and operational philosophy did not begin with his current position, but rather evolved from ideas and experiences he gathered while serving in different tactical and command roles over the years.
Disu made the remarks on Saturday during an interactive session with crime reporters in Lagos, where he engaged journalists on policing strategies, security challenges, and reforms within the force.
The session provided an opportunity for him to reflect on his career progression and to explain how early criticisms helped shape his current leadership mindset.
He noted that consistency in policing methods has always been important to him, especially in maintaining discipline, accountability, and public trust in law enforcement operations.
During the engagement, the police chief spoke about his tenure as Commander of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS), a tactical unit of the police known for responding to emergency security situations in Lagos State.
He recalled that during that period, he faced significant criticism from some members of the public and within security circles, who questioned his methods and intentions.
According to him, some critics accused him of engaging in “eye service,” suggesting that his efforts were aimed at gaining approval rather than achieving meaningful security outcomes.
However, Disu said such criticisms did not deter him, as he remained focused on what he believed was necessary to improve policing standards and public safety.
In his words, he stated:
“When I was Commander of RRS, I came under a series of attacks. Some said I was doing eye service.”
He added that over time, many of the initiatives introduced during his tenure later gained acceptance and were recognized as effective contributions to policing in Lagos.
The Inspector-General emphasized that leadership in law enforcement often comes with scrutiny, especially when reforms or new approaches challenge established norms.
He further explained that his experiences in earlier postings helped prepare him for higher responsibilities within the police hierarchy, including his current role overseeing national policing strategy…. See More
