Former federal lawmaker Shehu Sani has weighed in on the renewed xenophobic unrest in South Africa, offering a perspective based on videos circulating online.
In a tweet on his X handle on Saturday, April 25, 2026, he pointed out a noticeable pattern in the demonstrations, observing that the hostility directed at Nigerians and Ghanaians appeared to be driven largely by male participants, while many women seemed less aligned with such sentiments and more supportive of African unity.
His remarks come as fresh incidents of violence against foreign nationals have been reported in major cities including Johannesburg and Durban.
The attacks, which began earlier in the week, have reportedly involved the destruction of businesses owned by immigrants, looting of goods, and threats to personal safety, forcing many affected individuals to flee their homes or seek refuge elsewhere.
Members of the Nigerian community are said to be among those hardest hit, with losses running into millions of naira as shops and properties were targeted.
The situation has heightened anxiety among residents, many of whom remain in hiding amid fears of further escalation.
The resurgence of such violence echoes previous outbreaks recorded in 2015 and 2019, when similar attacks led to casualties, widespread destruction, and emergency evacuations of Nigerians back home.
