A report by The Times of Israel indicates that the United States has intensified efforts to curb militia activity in Iraq by placing a significant financial reward on a key figure linked to Iran-backed groups.
According to the announcement from the U.S. State Department, authorities are offering up to $10 million for information leading to the identification or location of Hashim Finyan Rahim al-Saraji, also known as Abu Alaa al-Walai. He is the leader of Kataeb Sayyid al-Shuhada, which Washington has officially designated as a terrorist organization.
U.S. officials allege that the group has been responsible for attacks on civilians within Iraq, as well as operations targeting American diplomatic facilities and military personnel in both Iraq and neighboring Syria. The reward offer also notes that individuals who provide credible information may not only receive financial compensation but could also be eligible for relocation assistance.
Despite being a militia leader, al-Saraji is believed to maintain connections within Iraq’s political landscape. He reportedly holds a position linked to the Coordination Framework, a Shiite political alliance that currently exerts significant influence over the country’s parliament. This intersection of armed groups and formal politics continues to complicate efforts to limit militia influence.
The situation reflects broader regional tensions involving Iran and its allied factions. In recent months, such groups have escalated attacks, striking locations including the U.S. embassy in Baghdad, areas near the capital’s airport, and infrastructure operated by foreign energy companies.
Iraq, which had been making gradual progress toward stability after years of conflict, now faces renewed uncertainty amid escalating regional hostilities involving the United States, Israel, and Iran. These developments have quickly reverberated across the country.
This latest move follows a similar action earlier in the month, when the United States announced a reward targeting a leader of Kataeb Hezbollah, a group previously accused of detaining an American journalist.
In parallel, reports suggest Washington is applying additional pressure on the Iraqi government, including measures such as freezing certain funding channels and halting cash transfers, in an effort to encourage stronger action against militia groups….See More
