According to a report by Daily Post on Monday, October 6, 2025, senator Adams Oshiomhole has urged former President Goodluck Jonathan to protect his political legacy by resisting calls for him to return to the presidential race in 2027.
The former governor of Edo State gave the advice during a television interview where he discussed political developments ahead of the next general elections.
Oshiomhole explained that Jonathan, who led the country between 2010 and 2015, had already secured a place in Nigeria’s political history and should focus on consolidating that reputation rather than subjecting himself to another electoral contest.
He warned that individuals pushing for Jonathan’s return might not have his best interest at heart, stressing that such a move could harm the image he currently enjoys as a respected statesman.
He said, “If I will be able to advise him, I will say ‘Sir, maintain this status’. If I were him I will spend the rest of my life trying to find relevance, which he has already found”.
While acknowledging the former president’s contributions during his time in office, Oshiomhole maintained that the All Progressives Congress (APC) would strongly challenge and defeat him if he decided to run in 2027.
He insisted that the ruling party remains prepared for the elections and would not allow Jonathan’s candidacy to alter its strategy or weaken its chances.
The senator further noted that Jonathan, who contested as the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate in 2015 but lost to the late President Muhammadu Buhari of the APC, had since become an influential voice in regional and international affairs.
He said this position provided the former president with an opportunity to shape discourse on governance and democracy outside the constraints of partisan competition.
Oshiomhole encouraged Jonathan to build on the recognition he has earned since leaving office and continue his work as a figure of unity, both within Nigeria and across Africa.
He emphasized that holding on to this status would serve him better than a return to the tense and competitive environment of presidential politics. See, More, Here>>>>
