Former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal, has alleged that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu aligned himself with northern political figures he described as insincere during his bid for the presidency.
Speaking during an interview on Channels Television, Lawal said his assessment of Tinubu is divided into two phases — before and after he sought national office. According to him, he had a positive impression of Tinubu prior to his presidential ambition but became critical when the then-candidate relocated to Abuja to pursue power.
Lawal claimed that Tinubu’s move exposed him to a network of politicians in the North whom he characterised as self-serving and morally questionable. He further alleged that some of these individuals concealed their true motives behind religious posturing.
He argued that Tinubu’s perceived limited familiarity with political dynamics outside Lagos contributed to his reliance on such figures. According to Lawal, this dependence stemmed from the belief that their support was necessary to secure electoral success at the national level.
