A United States-based nurse, identified as Sterling Lewis, has shared her experience of an alleged online relationship that ended in financial loss and emotional distress.
She spoke during a live broadcast on Brekete Family programme on Human rights radio and television, where she explained how what she believed was a genuine relationship turned out differently.
In her words, “I thought I was in a serious relationship with a man I met online, I didn’t know he was a scammer.”
According to her, she met the man—identified as Success—through social media, and their interaction gradually developed into what she believed was a committed relationship. She stated that based on the trust she had built with him, she began to support him financially.
Derlin Lois alleged that she sent money to cover expenses related to a proposed traditional marriage, including arrangements that were never fulfilled. She explained that despite making these payments, the expected ceremony did not take place.
Over time, she said inconsistencies in his explanations raised concerns, leading her to question the authenticity of the relationship. She eventually came to believe that she had been deceived.
Seeking redress, she brought her case to the program, appealing for assistance in recovering her funds and addressing what she described as a fraudulent situation.
The case highlights the risks associated with online relationships, especially when financial transactions are involved. It also underscores the importance of verifying identities and exercising caution in long-distance engagements.
