According to a report by The Sun on Sunday, April 5, 2026, former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar has said that members of the African Democratic Congress have reached a common understanding to support whoever emerges as the party’s presidential candidate for the 2027 general elections.
His remarks come at a time when the party is dealing with internal disagreements and leadership disputes.
Despite the tension, he explained that party stakeholders remain focused on unity and are prepared to work together when the time comes to present a candidate.
He made this known during an interview on DW Hausa, where he addressed recent developments affecting the party.
The situation intensified after the Independent National Electoral Commission decided not to recognise factions within the party led by David Mark and Nafiu Bala Gombe.
The electoral commission stated that it would not engage with either group until a pending case before the Federal High Court is resolved.
This decision has created uncertainty around the party’s leadership structure and its immediate political activities.
Amid these challenges, Atiku maintained that members aligned with the faction associated with David Mark are committed to maintaining internal cohesion.
He explained that agreements already in place among party leaders would guide decisions moving forward.
According to him, these understandings are meant to prevent division and ensure that the party presents a united front ahead of the next election cycle.
He stressed that the focus is on strengthening the party rather than allowing disagreements to weaken its structure.
Atiku also spoke about what he described as increasing participation by young Nigerians within the party.
He suggested that there is a noticeable shift, with more young people becoming interested in the ADC as a political platform.
According to him, this growing involvement reflects a broader desire among youths to engage in national politics and contribute to shaping the country’s future.
He indicated that the party is gradually positioning itself to attract and accommodate this new generation of political participants.
While concerns have been raised about the possible impact of the leadership crisis, Atiku dismissed the idea that the situation would significantly weaken the party.
He stated that membership continues to grow across different parts of the country, and that supporters remain committed despite the internal issues.
He added that the current challenges have not discouraged those who believe in the party’s direction and goals.
He said, “Of course, we shouldn’t have to say it, but this is external interference. They are using someone because they see our party getting stronger every day, and they think it will be a challenge to them if we continue to grow….See More
