According to a report by The Sun on Sunday, April 5, 2026, the National Coordinator of the Coalition of Northern Groups (CNG), Jamilu Aliyu Charanchi, has expressed concern over the potential outcomes of the 2027 general elections, suggesting that the results could be unfavorable for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the northern region of Nigeria.
He hinted that developments leading up to the elections might not favor the party that has been in power, signaling possible political shifts in the North.
Charanchi’s remarks come amid discussions about the state of security in the northern states, a matter that has dominated public discourse given the region’s history of insurgency and communal clashes.
While political leaders often present their perspectives on the situation, Charanchi emphasized that the reality on the ground might differ significantly from official narratives.
Recently, Northern governors convened in Abuja and claimed that security conditions in the North have seen marked improvements.
They highlighted efforts made by state authorities and security agencies to curb violence and enhance the safety of residents.
This announcement was part of a broader communication strategy aimed at reassuring citizens about governmental responses to security challenges.
However, Charanchi dismissed the governors’ statements, characterizing them as overly optimistic and disconnected from actual events in the region.
He stressed that his coalition closely monitors incidents of violence and insecurity, suggesting that official assessments may not accurately reflect the daily experiences of people living in affected areas.
According to Charanchi, data collected by his organization presents a starkly different picture.
He cited specific figures from early 2026, highlighting the persistence of violent acts across multiple northern states.
He pointed to January, when 481 people were reportedly killed nationwide, and February, which recorded 624 fatalities, as evidence that insecurity remains a critical issue.
He further illustrated the situation by referring to a particularly violent week in March 2026, when about 80 people were killed in just seven days.
Charanchi also mentioned that killings occurred in Borno, Kwara, Katsina, Kaduna, and Plateau states within that same month.
He argued that such figures contradict claims of improved security and underscore the daily risks faced by residents in these areas.
Charanchi concluded his assessment with a direct critique of official claims, stating, “I think they are simply being delusional. We are with the people, we monitor the situation and I can tell you it is even getting worse. We have the data. Take for instance in January 2026, 481 people were killed in Nigeria. In February, 624 Nigerians were killed. In just one week, from March 10 to 17, about 80 people were killed. This is not for the month. Then we have the killings across Borno, Kwara, Katsina, Kaduna and Plateau – all in March. How does that translate to improvement? Calling it ‘improved security’ is an insult to the daily reality of our people….See More
