According to a report by The Nigerian Tribune, a founding member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Osita Okechukwu, has criticised former Vice President Atiku Abubakar over his stance on opposition politics ahead of the 2027 elections.
Okechukwu argued that Atiku’s refusal to step aside for a broader opposition consensus has reinforced concerns among critics who view him as contributing to internal divisions within opposition ranks. He dismissed claims that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is working toward a one-party system, describing such allegations as misleading and a distraction from what he called the opposition’s lack of unity and direction.
He further alleged that Atiku’s political decisions, including his role during the 2023 presidential primaries of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), contributed to instability within the party. According to him, the ongoing disagreements among opposition figures have weakened efforts to form a strong and credible coalition capable of challenging the ruling party.
According to him, “As an octogenarian and elder statesman, His Excellency Atiku Abubakar should help build the consensus of Peter Obi and Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso presidential ticket to make 2027 presidential election robust, credible, challenging and shining example to the global community, instead of placing our democracy in unnecessary north-south debacle.
