In a recent interview shared by Trust Television, former lawmaker and policy analyst, Honourable Cletus Obun, raised concerns about Nigeria’s economic management and the courage of leadership in addressing fiscal challenges.
Obun argued that leadership is not just about occupying office but about making bold and sustainable decisions that safeguard the welfare of citizens. Drawing an analogy from household economics, he stressed the contradiction in how public funds are often handled. According to him, “You expect the price of rice to be ₦30,000, then you go and sell it for ₦80,000 and still withdraw your children from school.”
He explained that this mirrors the pattern of waste and mismanagement in government, where periods of economic surplus are rarely used to secure the future. Instead of investing excess revenues prudently, leaders often pursue populist expenditures, leaving the country vulnerable when revenues fall.
Obun further highlighted that such tendencies reveal a lack of courage to plan long-term, insisting that true leadership should focus on building reserves, diversifying the economy, and prioritizing development over short-term gains.
