According to Senator Shehu Sani’s statement in a post on his verified X account on Thursday October 2,2025, has praised the decision to rename the National Arts Theatre in Iganmu to the Wole Soyinka Centre for Arts and Creative Arts alongside other widely commendations, as a fitting tribute to the Nobel laureate’s contributions to literature and culture. This move honours Soyinka’s enduring legacy in promoting African arts on the global stage. The renaming signifies a commitment to preserving and celebrating Nigeria’s rich artistic heritage through institutional recognition.
Sani opined that credit is also due to former President Olusegun Obasanjo for originally constructing the edifice in preparation for the 1977 Festival of Arts and Culture (FESTAC). This landmark event brought together artists from across Africa and the diaspora, establishing the theatre as a symbol of cultural unity and expression. Obasanjo’s vision laid the foundation for a venue that has hosted countless performances and exhibitions over the decades.
Moreso, appreciation should also be extended to Godwin Emefiele, former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, for mobilizing the Bankers’ Committee to undertake extensive renovations. After years of neglect that left the structure in disrepair, these efforts have revitalized the theatre, restoring its functionality and aesthetic appeal.
The collaboration between financial institutions and government entities exemplifies effective public-private partnerships in cultural preservation. The revamped centre is poised to become a hub for creative activities, fostering talent development and cultural exchange. This initiative not only revives a national treasure but also inspires future generations to engage with the arts. As Nigeria continues to invest in its cultural infrastructure, such projects contribute to economic growth through tourism and creative industries.
