The Military Wrote What They Wanted And Gave It To Us In 1999 — Sowore Says Nigeria’s Constitution Is One Of The Most Fraudulent In The World

Human rights activist and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore has dismissed Nigeria’s 1999 Constitution as a fraudulent document imposed on the country by the military, saying it was never a true reflection of the will of the Nigerian people.

Sowore made the remarks while appearing on Morning Brief, a programme on Channels Television, where he delivered one of his most direct criticisms of the country’s constitutional framework.

“I don’t believe in the Nigerian Constitution. It is what the military felt they should give us in 1999,” Sowore said.

He described the constitution as fundamentally flawed and ranked it among the most fraudulent in the world, alleging that it was deliberately designed to protect the interests of those who were in power at the time of the transition from military to civilian rule rather than to serve the Nigerian people.

Sowore also took aim at Nigeria’s federal system of government, arguing that in its current form, it does not serve the broader population. Instead, he said the system benefits a select group of political elites who have used the constitutional framework to entrench their hold on power and resources at the expense of ordinary citizens.

He added that if given the opportunity, he would immediately overhaul the constitution to better reflect genuine democratic principles and the actual needs of Nigerians.

Sowore’s comments come at a time when conversations about constitutional reform and restructuring continue to dominate national discourse. Various stakeholders across the country including politicians, legal experts, and civil society groups have called for amendments to address what many see as deep structural imbalances in the current system….See More
