Irish Prime Minister Micheál Martin has called for diplomacy over military action as tensions between the United States and Iran continue to escalate. Speaking during an appearance on Special Report, Martin emphasized that peaceful resolution remains Ireland’s preferred approach to global conflicts.
During the interview with Fox News, Martin stated that from Ireland’s perspective, dialogue and negotiation should always come before the use of force. He made the remarks ahead of a scheduled St. Patrick’s Day engagement with former U.S. President Donald Trump.
“From the Irish perspective, we prefer peaceful resolution of conflict, if that’s possible, and we ultimately believe in diplomacy and dialogue,” Martin said.
While acknowledging concerns about Iran’s nuclear ambitions, Martin agreed that Tehran should not be allowed to develop nuclear weapons. However, he signaled a difference in approach, stressing that the method of addressing such threats should prioritize diplomatic engagement rather than military intervention.
Drawing from Ireland’s own history, Martin referenced The Troubles, a violent period that lasted roughly 30 years and involved clashes between unionist and nationalist groups. He explained that the country’s experience with prolonged conflict has shaped its commitment to peaceful conflict resolution.
“We had war ourselves on the island of Ireland. It was a terrible 30-year conflict, and we learned a lot in terms of how to resolve conflict,” he added.
Martin noted that Ireland’s past has influenced how it views current global tensions, reinforcing its belief in dialogue as a more sustainable path to stability.
