People Will No Longer Need To Stay In The City Centre — Wike Shows Off Massive Bridge Project Connecting Satellite Towns To Abuja

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has stirred reactions on social media after sharing photos of a major bridge project currently under construction in Abuja, saying the infrastructure will allow residents of satellite towns to move seamlessly to and from the city centre once completed.

Wike, who is the former governor of Rivers State, shared the photos on his official X account on Sunday, March 16, 2026. The images showed the minister alongside some of his aides inspecting the project site. In the photos, the scale of the construction was visible, with work appearing to be at an advanced stage.

After sharing the pictures, Wike said he had visited several project sites across the FCT where construction work is ongoing and expressed satisfaction with the pace of progress.

Speaking about the significance of the bridge project, Wike explained that it is designed to ease movement between the satellite towns surrounding Abuja and the city centre, a challenge that has been a source of frustration for residents for years. “When completed, it will allow residents to move seamlessly from the satellite towns to the city centre,” Wike said. “With a road like this, people won’t need to come and stay in the city centre. Rather, they can come to work from Kuje and go back on time.”

The statement suggests that the project is aimed at reducing the pressure on accommodation and traffic within Abuja’s city centre by making it easier for people who live in areas like Kuje and other satellite towns to commute daily without the need to relocate closer to the heart of the capital. Abuja has long struggled with the challenge of satellite town residents facing difficult and time-consuming commutes due to poor road infrastructure linking the outskirts to the central business district.

The post quickly attracted a wave of reactions from social media users, with opinions divided along familiar lines. Some users praised Wike for the visible infrastructure development, saying the bridge project is evidence of his commitment to transforming the FCT and improving the quality of life for residents. Supporters argued that the kind of large-scale road and bridge construction being carried out under Wike’s tenure is exactly what the capital city needs to address its long-standing transportation and accessibility challenges.

Others however questioned the minister’s priorities, asking whether the focus on building expensive infrastructure in Abuja is justified at a time when many Nigerians are struggling with the rising cost of living and economic hardship. Some commentators raised concerns about the cost of the project and called for transparency regarding the contracts and funding behind the construction. A few users also questioned whether the project would be completed on schedule or whether it would join the long list of abandoned government projects across the country.
