Suspected Thief Who Fell Asleep During Robbery Operation Dies Days After Arrest in Ondo State

In an unusual incident that drew public attention at the time, the Nigeria Police in Ondo State arrested a suspected thief who reportedly fell asleep inside a house he had allegedly broken into during a stealing operation in Owo, Ondo State.

According to reports, the incident occurred on August 5, 2018, when the suspect allegedly entered a residence with the intention of stealing valuables. However, during the operation, he reportedly fell into a deep sleep inside the victim’s house, leading to his eventual arrest.

Residents said the homeowner discovered the suspect sleeping inside the building and quickly alerted neighbors and security authorities. Police officers who responded to the scene subsequently took the suspect into custody.

During the arrest, officers reportedly found 400 milligrams of Tramadol in the suspect’s possession. Tramadol is a prescription medication often used as a painkiller, but it has also been widely abused in Nigeria and other countries due to its psychoactive effects when taken in large quantities.

The unusual nature of the arrest attracted public attention after images circulated showing the suspect still asleep while being paraded by police officers. Witnesses at the scene described the situation as both surprising and puzzling.

Authorities later confirmed that the suspect remained in custody while still showing signs of prolonged sleep or severe drowsiness.

Tragically, the situation took a darker turn when the suspect reportedly died on August 13, 2018, about eight days after his arrest.
