A chieftain of the People’s Democratic Party and convener of The Alternative, Segun Sowunmi, has continued his criticism of former presidential candidate Peter Obi, raising concerns about what he described as Obi’s approach to governance, inclusiveness, and national outreach. Sowunmi made the remarks during an interview on the Selah Medidate Podcast on Saturday, February 28, 2026.
During the interview, Sowunmi alleged that Obi’s political outlook is shaped by a narrow regional perspective. “And he’s so clannish,” he said. He clarified his position by distinguishing between broader ethnic identity and what he described as a more limited orientation. “I know people that worked with him now. He’s not even tribal he’s clannish,” Sowunmi stated.
He further elaborated on this claim by referencing Obi’s background. “He’s so clannish that everything comes from the mindset of that Anambra, Onitsha area that he comes from,” he said. Sowunmi presented this as part of a broader critique of Obi’s national reach and engagement across different regions of the country.
In support of his argument, Sowunmi pointed to what he described as disparities in public spending and development efforts during Obi’s time in office. “You will never see him, tell me tell him to tell me when he was spending money on nursing schools all over,” he said. He then questioned the geographical distribution of such investments. “Tell him to show you the one he spent on in the southwest. Tell him to show you the one he spent in the north,” Sowunmi added.
Continuing, he contrasted those claims with what he described as limited interventions outside Obi’s home region. “He will go and do one small borehole for them with one small pipe of water,” he said.
