The Nigeria Police Force has responded to allegations that N100 million was paid into the bank account of the son of the Inspector-General of Police, following claims made by activist and publisher Omoyele Sowore.
Speaking during an interview on Channels Television, the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Benjamin Hundeyin, addressed the controversy and the legal steps taken by the police. He said he personally contacted the IGP’s son to verify the claim shortly after it surfaced online.
According to Hundeyin, the IGP’s son confirmed that the N100 million deposit briefly appeared in his account but was immediately reversed at his instruction. Hundeyin stated that the son contacted his account officer as soon as he noticed the transaction and requested that the funds be returned. He added that he reviewed the bank statement provided to him and found no evidence of any re-deposit or withdrawal of the funds, contrary to reports circulating on some media platforms.
Hundeyin dismissed claims that the money was returned and later paid back into the account, describing such reports as inaccurate. He maintained that the bank statement showed only the initial deposit and its prompt reversal.
The police have since taken legal action over what they describe as defamatory allegations against the IGP, his family and other senior officers. Courts have granted interim injunctions restraining Sowore and his media outlet from publishing certain claims pending the determination of substantive suits.
The development has sparked debate about accountability, media responsibility and the role of the courts in handling disputes involving public officials. As of the time of filing this report, the matter remains before the courts for further hearing….See More
