Why Are You Arresting El-Rufai Because He Said On TV That We Were Listening To People—Okonkwo Reacts

A member of the National Working Committee of the African Democratic Congress, Kenneth Okonkwo, engaged in a tense exchange during an interview on Arise Television on Tuesday, February 24, 2026, while reacting to the recent political violence in Benin City.

During the discussion, Okonkwo questioned what he described as selective responses to political statements: “Well, then why are you arresting El-Rufai because he said on television, he said that we were listening to people. No, I’m trying to tell you that what is good for the goods is good for the ganda. If you would not blame Okpebholo having made the threat.”

The anchor interjected, stating, “No, Okpebholo did not say that. No, hold on. Okpebholo did not say that. That if you come into my state and you don’t tell me I’m going to attack you. That’s not what he said.” Okonkwo responded, “I cannot guarantee your security.”

The interviewer further argued, “Yeah, El Rufai said on this program that we have our ways of listening to the government and we were listening to the government. We essentially, you know, broadly speaking, tapped the national security advisors. That’s a completely different thing.”

In reply, Okonkwo said, “What he made is an allegation in law because you have dragged me into it. Even if you come to law court and plead guilty, you are still expected to prove the ingredients of the offense. Before the courts can convict you.
