How IGP Egbetokun was asked to resign at a meeting with Tinubu at the Presidential Villa on Monday

The Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has stepped down from his position after reportedly being asked to resign by Bola Tinubu, according to Premium Times.

A source in the Presidency said Mr Egbetokun met with the president at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Monday, where he was requested to resign.

He is expected to be replaced by Tunji Disu, who currently serves as an Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG).

According to PREMIUM TIMES, although there has been no official public announcement yet, sources in both the Presidency and the police headquarters said plans are being made for a formal handover ceremony.

He was 58 years old when he became IGP and was originally expected to retire on September 4, 2024, when he turned 60. However, the National Assembly later amended the Police Act, allowing him to complete a full four-year term unless removed by the president. This meant he was expected to remain in office until October 31, 2027.

Some Nigerians had raised concerns about his continued stay in office, but the Presidency maintained that it was legal under the amended Police Act 2024.

During his time as police chief, Mr Egbetokun faced criticism over allegations of human rights violations.

As of the time of this report, the Presidency has not released an official statement confirming his resignation. Attempts to contact presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga and police spokesperson Ben Hundeyin were unsuccessful. However, a source said an official announcement is expected soon…. Discover More
