In a recent interview shared by Arise News, the Lagos State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Gbenga Omotosho, faulted claims by traders at the Trade Fair Complex in Ojo who argued that federal ownership of the land gave them the right to erect structures without state approval.
Omotosho explained that the demolition of illegal developments at the complex followed due process, noting that state authorities had engaged the management and occupants over the issue for more than a year before action was taken. He recalled that government officials were even attacked during an inspection exercise last year, forcing security agencies to intervene.
Addressing the controversy over federal approval, Omotosho emphasized that land use and building permits within Lagos fall under state jurisdiction, in line with the 1992 Urban and Regional Planning Law and a 2003 Supreme Court judgment. He insisted that all developments, whether on federal or state-owned land, require clearance from Lagos State authorities.
“It is ignorance for people to say that because the trade fair complex belongs to the federal government they can build whatever they like,” Omotosho stated, stressing that none of the demolished structures had valid permits.
He further warned that disregarding planning laws poses grave risks to Lagos, and the state will not allow lawlessness in urban development.Continue, Full, Reading>>>>
