We Saw the Shame When El-Rufai’s Supporters Started Shouting, ‘Nothing Can Happen to Him’ —Nze
During an interview with AIT, political analyst Ezeocha Nze criticized the dramatic scenes that unfolded recently when security operatives attempted to detain former Kaduna State governor Malam Nasir El-Rufai at Abuja’s Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport.
El-Rufai’s arrival from abroad turned contentious after operatives reportedly sought to take him into custody without first presenting a formal invitation or warrant, prompting a large number of his supporters to intervene. Video footage from the incident shows his backers forming a human shield around him and chanting slogans of loyalty, including “He is our leader; nothing will happen,” as published in news reports of the episode.
Speaking on AIT, Nze described the airport confrontation as overblown and embarrassing for the country, saying the way El-Rufai’s supporters reacted exposed deeper issues in the nation’s political culture.
According to him, “Trying to arrest him was a drama that went too far, and we saw the shame, so to say, when his supporters started shouting, ‘He’s our leader, nothing can happen to him,’ and other things like that. This country should be moving above that, you see, staging it to look like there’s a motive behind it. If you’re arresting him, don’t make him start having pity; make it be a formal thing, invite him, and let him honor the invitation.”
Nze argued that the spectacle at the airport undercut the integrity of legal processes and reinforced perceptions that political leaders and their supporters may act above the law. He stressed that, in a functioning democracy, authorities should follow proper procedures such as issuing formal invitations or warrants rather than creating confrontational scenarios that risk public disorder and damage confidence in governance institutions.
