I Spent My Life In UK, Then I Came Back, I Wasn’t Failing, I Was On A 6 Figure Salary In US -Onanuga

Dr. Oluwakemi Onanuga, a U.S. and U.K.-trained lawyer and IT professional, has highlighted her decision to return home despite a thriving career overseas. She said she was earning a six‑figure salary in the United States but chose to come back because she believed her skills could make a greater impact in Nigeria.

Speaking in an interview with BEHIND THE FAME. Dr. Onanuga explained that she spent her early years in the United Kingdom before returning to Nigeria with her parents. She noted that in earlier times, many Nigerians studied abroad briefly and returned, but today the trend is different, with more people seeking to leave permanently. She emphasized that she represents a new generation bold enough to come back despite the allure of opportunities overseas.

Dr. Onanuga stressed that she was not struggling abroad but made a deliberate choice to return. She believes that the expertise she gained over the years could be best applied to solving challenges in Nigeria.

She said,

“I spent the early years of my life living in the UK then I came back into Nigeria quite young with my parents. You know those days our parents used to go to school abroad for those who have parents who could afford it and they would quickly study three,four five, years and come back. The story today is different. I’m one of those in modern times who choose to come back. You know we’re always talking of running away, but what about those of us who are bold enough to come back? I was on a six figure salary in the US earning six figures in dollars. I wasn’t failing, I wasn’t stranded—I was doing well. But I decided that the skills I had acquired over the years could be best served here in Nigeria.”
