He went to his bank to report ₦2.6m he didn’t expect and asked them to do the right thing” — Daso

According to report by Punch News on February 9, 2026, a police constable serving in the Borno State Police Command has been lauded for his rare display of integrity after reporting an unexpected ₦2.6 million credit alert to his bank and immediately seeking the right course of action, police authorities confirmed on Monday.

According to the state police spokesperson, ASP Nahum Daso, the officer identified as Muhammad Alhaji Muhammad received a ₦2.6m alert in his bank account last Thursday, despite not being due any such payment.

Fully aware that the amount was neither solicited nor expected, Muhammad took the unusual step of going to his bank early the following day to report the transaction, urging the institution to “do the right thing.”

Daso told PUNCH Online that the officer did not assume the money was a gift or ignore the alert; instead, he knew something was amiss and acted on principle. “When he received the alert on his phone … he knew he was not expecting any particular money,” Daso said, recounting the constable’s decision to immediately notify bank officials and request they investigate the transaction.

Bank personnel later traced the source of the funds to a United Bank for Africa (UBA) branch in Sokoto. Following internal verification, the bank issued a consent form that allowed the money to be reversed to the rightful owner.

In a meeting with the Borno Command’s Commissioner of Police, Muhammad detailed the steps he took to ensure the funds were properly handled.

On his motivation, Daso quoted the officer saying that he was mindful of negative public perceptions about the Nigeria Police Force and believed that discipline and honesty, values inculcated during police training, should guide his actions.
