US Troops: “No Muslim leader should disappear, be assassinated or rendered–Akintola

Professor Ishaq Akintola, Executive Director of the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC), has called on the Federal Government to provide clear explanations over reports suggesting that United States military personnel are operating within Nigeria. He raised concerns about the implications for national sovereignty and the safety of Muslim leaders nationwide.

In a report published by Punch on Friday, February 6, 2026, Akintola expressed worry over the absence of transparent information regarding the alleged deployment. He stressed that any foreign military presence is a sensitive matter that demands openness, particularly concerning its mandate, duration, and scope.

MURIC noted that the lack of clarity surrounding the issue could generate anxiety and suspicion among the public. The organisation emphasized that Nigerians have the right to be fully informed about any agreement involving foreign forces, especially where internal security is concerned.

According to the group, matters relating to defence and security should be handled with accountability and clear communication. Akintola warned that silence or ambiguous responses from authorities could create the impression that crucial decisions were being made without public oversight.

He also expressed discomfort with how the reported mission was being portrayed, cautioning against framing it as protection for only a single religious group. Such an approach, he said, could worsen divisions in a country already struggling with widespread insecurity.

Akintola pointed out that insecurity affects Nigerians across all religions, ethnic groups, and regions, noting that violence does not discriminate by faith. He added that any security initiative must be perceived as serving the entire population equally.

The MURIC leader further warned that a one-sided narrative could wrongly imply that only certain communities were at risk, while downplaying the suffering of others. He said this could heighten tension rather than foster national unity.

He stressed that if the reports of foreign troops are accurate, their presence must not become a justification for targeting Muslim leaders or limiting religious practices. Akintola maintained that every citizen is entitled to freedom of worship and personal safety without fear or harassment.

He explained that his concerns stem from the need to safeguard religious liberty, uphold equality before the law, and prevent discrimination that could arise during security operations in a diverse society like Nigeria.

Akintola concluded by warning against fear, marginalisation, and misuse of authority, reminding the government that security efforts must respect fundamental human rights. He firmly stated that no Muslim leader should be abducted, killed, or forcibly removed under any circumstances.
