Karim Sadjadpour, a Senior Fellow at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, has offered analysis on the latest round of talks between the United States and Iran, which were mediated by Oman following weeks of rising tensions between the two longtime rivals.
The renewed diplomatic engagement comes amid heightened concerns over regional security, military posturing, and uncertainty surrounding both countries’ strategic intentions. The discussions are viewed as an effort to reduce the risk of open confrontation after a period marked by sharp rhetoric, military signaling, and growing pressure on Tehran over its regional activities and nuclear program.
In an interview with NBC News, Sadjadpour expressed doubts about whether the negotiations produced any meaningful breakthroughs. He emphasized that Iran’s primary objective appears to be avoiding a potential U.S. military strike rather than reaching a comprehensive agreement.
“I’m skeptical that progress was made, but for Iran, their goal was to avert a U.S. military attack. And it seems, for the moment, the United States and President Trump are focused on this diplomatic process. But we know from history that President Trump, even when negotiations are happening and it appears diplomacy is taking its course, is also prepared to take military action. So I think the Iranian regime cannot sleep too comfortably at night.
