99-Year-Old Man Marries His Girlfriend, 40, After 20 Years Of Dating

After 20 years of relationship, Johana Maritim Butuk, a 99-year-old Kenyan man, and Alice Jemeli, a 40-year-old woman, got married.

On Saturday, January 14, 2023, the couple had a joyous wedding ceremony in Soy, Uasin Gishu County.

Butuk was 69 years old and Jemeli was 20 years old when they first met in 2003. Despite the age gap, their friendship grew stronger as they went on dates.

In December 2022, the old man dropped down on one knee and proposed to Jemeli.

According to The Standard, Butuk has been alive for 99 years and has never been romantically involved; therefore, this is his first union. Jemeli, however, is grateful that Butuk accepted her three children from a previous union.

The Tuiyobei Soy B hamlet’s mud-walled home where the couple were married Together with some of their relatives, they took a stroll around the unfenced homestead.

Locals who attended the celebration at the nearby St. Mark’s Soy B Catholic Church described it as being highly colorful. There, the couple said their vows to one another.

Locals claim that they have never seen a man get married to a lady his granddaughter’s age when he was 99 years old.

When The Standard visited the couple’s house, they were discussing their plans to use their limited finances to construct a nice home for themselves.

I’ve never been married because I’ve always desired mental stability. All of my friends were already grandparents when I decided to get married, and I was working a low-wage job as well. But after I got married to my wife, I realized that I had finally found what I was looking for in life. Butuk asserts that Alice engages in less conversation and removes obstacles.

He continues, “I loved her for her modesty when we first met, when we were young.” Despite the age gap, Tabasei, who had first introduced me to her, and I clicked right away. I’m pleased that my wife is now an adult and a responsible individual.

“When we first met in 2003, I admired him.” After leaving an abusive relationship, I met Mzee (Butuk) through a woman, and I was immediately struck by his humility and listening skills. Jemeli recalls, “I opted to be his assistant even though he was old because I expected to get married like other ladies.”

She claims that when they first met, Butuk was unclothed and living on the street, and she takes pleasure in having changed that. Arap Kenei, one of Butuk’s siblings, lived with him in the same house.

After the passing of his sibling, according to Jemeli, her husband’s problems allegedly got worse, causing her to move in. Later, they constructed the mud-walled home they currently inhabit.

Butuk, a man of few words, used to be a herder. He frequently avoided arguments and disagreements that are common in romantic relationships and wooing. He adored eating guava leaves and avoided conversing with ladies, according to the locals.

“I’ve been late a few times, but today I’m content since I’m married.” I had my circumcision in 1943, far later than my high school classmates. Butuk says, “I’m sure that the joy in my marriage will increase the length of my life.”

His wife, Jemeli, claims she works as a housegirl at a nearby household and makes Sh3,000 per month.

Because of the generosity of neighbors and well-wishers who found out about their plans to walk down the aisle, their colorful wedding was made possible.

Despite their financial difficulties, the couple maintains they want to build a bigger and finer home.

I dated several young men before falling in love with my husband, but Jemeli claims I chose Mzee above them because he offers me the flexibility to work and raise my children on my own.
