Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, a popular Islamic cleric, has stated that contrary to reports, he never claimed the United States targeted him for elimination during the recent U.S. military airstrike against terrorists in Sokoto
In a post Gumi shared on his Facebook account, he stated that the misunderstanding likely came from a lecture he once gave in a mosque about an event in August 2012, when he was told Boko Haram had planned to eliminate him. He said in that incident, the two Boko Haram terrorists who came to assassinate him were killed instantly when their own bomb exploded near his house.
Gumi stated that he is comfortably staying at home with his family without fear, intimidation, or apprehension. He advised all news agencies that reported the false information to publicly withdraw their stories and apologise.
In Gumi’s words: “I believe the source of misinterpretation was a lecture I gave in the mosque on how, in August 2012, I was told that Boko Haram had targeted me for elimination. The two people who came to execute the plan were killed instantly when the bomb detonated in their hands near my house.”
