Dr. Yahuza Getso, a security expert, has raised questions over the implications of the reported United States airstrikes in Sokoto State, following an interview he granted on Nigeria Info FM on Tuesday, December 30, 2025.
Speaking during the programme, Dr. Getso called for what he described as necessary clarifications surrounding developments that followed the airstrikes.
He referenced the visit of the Chief of Army Staff to the Sultan of Sokoto shortly after the incident, asking, “Why the Chief of Army Staff visited the Sultan after the activity?”
He further queried the role and status of the Sultan, stating, “Is the Sultan not a key player or not a stakeholder or not someone that’s supposed to be respected?”
Dr. Getso also questioned the broader implications of the operation, asking, “Are Muslims being the targets?” He linked this concern to claims surrounding religious violence, saying, “And if at all, the focus is the Christian genocide as foreknown by the US.”
He urged a review of official data, adding, “Let’s look at the statistical data through the National Bureau of Statistics and see the total number that have been killed between the year of 2011 to 2025 to date.”
According to him, “I’m very optimistic, the total number of Muslim kills are higher, the proportion will be 80 or probably 90 and 10.” He then questioned the choice of location, asking, “So why Sokoto? Which is the city of Caliphate.”
Dr. Getso further addressed claims about the presence of international terrorist groups, stating, “If you say ISIS are coming to Nigeria, through that ISIS, we know there are a relationship between a lecture base, Borno-Cameroon Church in Niger Republic.”
He added, “And we know there are presence of ISIS and ISWAP activities.” According to him, “There is a close relationship between ISIS and ISWAP. And their allies are in between the Cameroon, Chad and Nigeria.” He also noted, “Yes, of course, they are also in Mali.”
He raised questions about geographical proximity, asking, “But what is the distance between Tangaza and Tambuwal with that of Mali?”
He stated, “You have more than, more than 3,000 kilometers between where the bomb is detonated and to the area where bandits or ISIS are populated in Chadi, in Cameroon, in Chadi or in Mali.”
Referring to Lakurawa, he said, “So if you are targeting Lakurawa, we know where Lakurawa are and we know locations where they are. And the government knows where they are.”
He added, “Lakurawa are in part of the border communities between Nigeria and Nigeria.” He further asked, “Is that not Tangaza?” and noted, “In border communities between Nigeria and Benin. Tangaza has never been violent in the first place.”
Dr. Getso concluded by questioning the rationale behind the choice of targets, stating, “So if at all there is sincerity and honesty and there is sincerity in purpose and really the target was to hit up the places where the criminals are, why Sokoto and why Tangaza?”
