An Islamic Cleric, Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, has alleged that the United States is testing Nigeria’s unity through the narrative of Christian genocide in the country.
Speaking during an interview with Channels TV, Sheikh Gumi identified the strong bonds between Nigerian ethnic groups despite their diversity. “You go to Lagos and you see Hausas everywhere, you see Yorubas in Maiduguri doing their business. We Nigerians we are united. Just go to the market. That’s when you know there’s unity between Nigerians. We share the same military, we share the same police, and we share the same politics. So I don’t know what animosity that we have. Why do we want a narrative that will give a foreigner that has once colonized us to have their way,” he said.
He also explained the conflicts in different parts of Nigeria, arguing that the violence follows similar patterns regardless of location. He stated that incidents in Benue, Plateau State, and Southern Kaduna mirror those occurring in Katsina State.
Sheikh Gumi noted that the key difference lies in how the conflicts are framed rather than their underlying nature. While violence in Katsina involves clashes between different ethnic groups, he explained that conflicts in Benue centre on tensions between herders and farmers.
The cleric suggested that external actors are exploiting these differences to undermine Nigerian unity.
