You call a police officer names, not knowing he is the one who made you a commissioned officer —Wike

According to report by Punch News on November 13, 2025, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has condemned the alleged verbal abuse of police officers by a naval officer during a confrontation over a disputed land in the Gaduwa area of Abuja.

Speaking to journalists on Thursday ahead of the FCT Executive Council meeting, Wike expressed disappointment that a serving military officer could display such contempt toward fellow security personnel performing lawful duties.

“You call a police officer names, not knowing he is the one who made you a commissioned officer,” — Wike said, criticizing what he described as an arrogant and undisciplined attitude unbecoming of a member of the armed forces.

The incident reportedly occurred when Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA) officials attempted to stop ongoing construction on a land allegedly linked to a retired Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Awwal Zubairu Gambo (retd).

The naval officer, identified as Lieutenant A.M. Yerima, allegedly obstructed the officials and made derogatory remarks toward the police officers accompanying them.

Wike said such behavior undermines the principles of respect and hierarchy that bind Nigeria’s security institutions together.

“I have always respected the military and understand what the institution stands for,” Wike added. “But no officer, no matter his rank, should look down on another uniformed agency.”

The minister reaffirmed his commitment to upholding law and order in the Federal Capital Territory, stressing that impunity and misuse of power would not be tolerated under his administration.
