According to a report by Iran International on February 15, 2026, Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong stated that Iran’s rulers possess no legitimacy.
She remarked that any administration which maintains control by slaughtering its own citizens is tyrannical.
Wong spoke in Australia’s Senate, noting that Canberra has firmly denounced Iran’s savage suppression of non-violent demonstrators.
Australia insists on upholding the freedom to demonstrate, calls for an immediate halt to murders, unlawful imprisonments, and network blackouts.
Wong spoke on Australia’s resolute actions toward the authorities. These encompass penalties on over 200 persons and organizations tied to Iran’s power structure.
More than 100 of these concern the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), and further steps include ousting Iran’s envoy from Australia and classifying the IRGC as a terrorist group.
Such initiatives show Australia’s dedication to exerting pressure on the authorities while backing the Iranian populace.
The minister stressed unity with those defying tyranny, as Australia aligns with courageous Iranians in their fight against a repressive order.
The authorities’ harsh clampdown features overwhelming force, deadly aggression, and threats from security personnel, encompassing the IRGC and Basij militias.
Wong denounced the appalling deployment of brutality against ordinary people, pointing out that the administration slaughters and detains thousands for joining calm rallies.
Australia’s approach expands on prior efforts, like specific economic penalties and entry prohibitions on high-ranking figures and IRGC-affiliated groups accountable for subjugating citizens, quashing demonstrations, and endangering lives within and beyond borders.
The government regards the authorities as having violated fundamental boundaries via their hostility and violations of human rights.
Wong declared that no governing body which depends on assassinating its citizens to retain power can claim any validity.
