According to report from Vanguard on 8th November 2026, Honourable Ikenga Ugochinyere has issued a strong warning to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, over comments perceived as an attack on the Igbo people. According to the federal lawmaker, any insult directed at the President-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo amounts to an insult on the entire Igbo nation and should never be repeated.
Ugochinyere described Ohanaeze Ndigbo as the highest socio-cultural organisation representing the interests of the Igbo people worldwide, stressing that its leadership deserves respect regardless of political differences. He said the President-General occupies a symbolic position that transcends partisan politics and must not be dragged into personal or political disputes.
Speaking during a public address, Ugochinyere warned that the patience of the Igbo people should not be mistaken for weakness. He noted that while Igbos are tolerant and accommodating, there are clear boundaries that must not be crossed. According to him, disrespect toward the leadership of Ohanaeze crosses that boundary and risks provoking widespread resentment.
The lawmaker emphasised that political disagreements should be handled with maturity and restraint, rather than through inflammatory statements that could deepen ethnic divisions. He cautioned that Nigeria’s fragile unity requires responsible conduct from public office holders, especially those in powerful positions.
Ugochinyere further called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and other national leaders to prevail on Wike to exercise caution in his public utterances. He argued that unchecked rhetoric from influential figures could inflame tensions and undermine national cohesion at a time when the country needs dialogue and mutual respect.
He also pointed out that Igbo youths and leaders across different regions have expressed concern over the issue, describing the reaction as a reflection of collective sentiment rather than the opinion of a few individuals. According to him, the growing anger highlights how deeply the matter resonates within the Igbo community.
While reiterating his commitment to peaceful coexistence and constructive engagement, Ugochinyere made it clear that further attacks on Ohanaeze leadership would not be taken lightly. He urged Wike to limit his political battles to appropriate platforms and avoid statements that could be interpreted as targeting an entire ethnic group.
