In a recent interview with Arise TV, public affairs analyst Liborous Oshoma discussed the highly publicized altercation between FCT Minister Nyesom Wike and Naval Lieutenant Yerima. He highlighted that the minister lacked the authority to give commands to the officer during the incident.
Oshoma remarked, “There’s no way Yerima would follow your orders, whether military or civilian.” He elaborated that Yerima was strictly following military directives and was obligated to adhere to the military chain of command, rather than taking orders from civilian personnel present at the scene. He pointed out that Wike’s presence at the contentious land site unnecessarily escalated an operation already overseen by the proper authorities.
Oshoma stressed that the clash could have been avoided, asserting that military personnel should not have to forsake their duties merely because a political figure is on-site. He contended that while Wike serves as the FCT Minister, his role is to provide policy guidance and oversight—not to enforce directives on military personnel.
He indicated that the core issue lies in the failure to uphold institutional boundaries. Oshoma affirmed that Lieutenant Yerima acted in accordance with the law: adhering to military protocols, maintaining composure, and exhibiting discipline despite pressure from a civilian leader.
In closing, Oshoma cautioned that such incidents are likely to persist if public officials fail to distinguish between administrative oversight and operational command. He emphasized that it is crucial to respect the distinct roles of both civilian authorities and the military to avoid unnecessary conflicts and ensure effective governance in the Federal Capital Territory.
