Prince Francis Chilaka, a public affairs expert, has shared thoughts on why Nigerians often doubt politicians who buy properties abroad.
He explained that these purchases raise questions because people wonder how politicians afford them.
Speaking during an interview on Voice of the People TV, Chilaka was asked to explain when the purchase of luxury assets by public officials could be deemed unlawful.
In response, Chilaka was careful to draw a distinction. He stressed that the concern was not necessarily about legality in itself but about the context in which these purchases take place. “No, we’re not saying it’s unlawful,” he clarified. “What we are saying is that Nigeria has become a country where leadership is surrounded by corruption and a deficit of trust.”
According to him, this lack of trust has created an environment where any significant display of wealth by those in power is immediately questioned.
The analyst pointed out that these doubts were not mere gossip but rooted in legitimate concerns about accountability and transparency in public office. He posed a direct question that has been on the lips of many Nigerians: “How much is the governor earning? How much are you (Wike) earning today as a minister?”
Chilaka further referenced details from reports about the recent transaction under scrutiny, noting the unusual method of payment. “We hear the property was bought in cash, and we know America is a credit society. So how did you (Wike) gather that kind of cash?” he asked, suggesting the transaction itself raises red flags.
He insisted that raising such questions should not be dismissed as hostility but rather embraced as part of healthy democratic accountability. See, More, Here>>>>
