A member of the House of Representatives, Imo Ugochinyere, has raised serious concerns over the growing political tension in Rivers State following moves by some lawmakers loyal to former governor Nyesom Wike to impeach Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy. He spoke during a press briefing on TVC News, where he warned that the situation could worsen insecurity across the country if not handled carefully.
According to him, President Bola Tinubu had given political opportunities to Wike and his allies in good faith, but they have failed to bring real value or support. He claimed that the votes credited to them during the last election were small and controversial, adding that the process was poorly handled and damaged public trust.
Ugochinyere argued that instead of using their positions to support stability and good governance, these political actors are empowering their loyal followers in ways that encourage division and unrest. He warned that such actions are being carried out under the excuse of supporting the president, while in reality, they are driven by personal interests.
He further stated that these activities are not helping the ruling government but are instead creating fear among citizens. According to him, many people are beginning to believe that their votes do not matter, which could discourage participation in future elections.
In his words, “Mr President, you brought him to partake; all he brought was 50,000 votes, that they struggled to mutilate.”
