Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike has fired back at the President of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, John Mbata, following comments in which Mbata allegedly described him as “semi-illiterate” and a “motor washer.”
Wike made the remarks during an interview on TVC News, where he responded sharply to the description, insisting that his personal journey and political record speak louder than insults. Speaking with characteristic bluntness, the former Rivers State governor said he was unbothered by the labels attached to him, noting that his rise in public service was built on resilience rather than elite approval.
“Semi Illiterate, I agree, washing motor, I agree,” Wike said. “A motor washer became Chairman of council which they wanted to be and they couldn’t get it. A motor washer became Minister of State for Education, which they didn’t get. A motor washer became governor of one of the impotent states in Nigeria for 8 years.”
Wike stressed that those who now question his intellect or background had, at different times, benefitted from his authority while he held public office. According to him, their criticism is rooted more in resentment than facts.
“That time when I was signing contract for their company, they didn’t know I was a semi-Illiterate,” he added.
The outspoken minister argued that leadership should be judged by performance and impact, not by personal attacks or social background. He maintained that Nigeria’s political space should accommodate individuals from diverse origins who are willing to serve, rather than being dominated by what he described as elitist prejudice.
