According to a report by The Cable on Wednesday, December 31, 2025, Ibrahim Mohammed, a suspected Boko Haram member arrested in connection with the mosque bombing in Maiduguri, Borno state, has revealed details of the attack.
He claimed he was paid about N100,000 to carry out the operation, which killed five people and injured 32 others on Christmas Eve.
The explosion occurred inside a mosque at Gamboru market, creating panic among worshippers and nearby residents.
The incident involved a suicide bomber who detonated an improvised explosive device (IED) during prayers, causing widespread casualties, security forces immediately cordoned off the area and began rescue operations.
Emergency services rushed the injured to hospitals, while the military launched an investigation to apprehend those responsible for the attack.
Mohammed, one of the two suspects arrested by army troops, said he was sent by his leaders, whom he identified as Adamu and Abubakar.
According to Zagazola Makama, a counterinsurgency platform, Mohammed said the operation was orchestrated under the directive of Boko Haram commanders operating between Adamawa state and the Mandara mountains. “When I returned to the mosque, they were evacuating dead bodies. I helped them convey the corpses and injured people in emergency vehicles,” he said.
Authorities confirmed that Mohammed actively participated in the aftermath of the explosion by posing as a first responder.
His involvement raised concerns about the methods insurgents use to exploit chaotic situations to blend in and evade capture.
Security officials are reviewing CCTV footage and interviewing witnesses to identify any accomplices who may have assisted in the operation.
Local leaders in Borno state have condemned the attack and urged residents to remain vigilant, community members have been cooperating with security agencies, providing information to help prevent further incidents.
The military has increased patrols around public gathering areas, including markets and places of worship, to enhance safety measures during the festive season.
Investigations are ongoing, with authorities focusing on disrupting the network that enabled the attack, efforts are being made to track the financial transactions that funded the bombing, as well as to apprehend other suspects linked to Boko Haram activities in the region.
Security officials have reiterated their commitment to protecting civilians and preventing future attacks.
