The renowned clergyman Prophet Joshua Iginla has reiterated his demand for the immediate and unconditional release of Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). This statement comes on the heels of Iginla’s open letter to President Bola Tinubu shortly after he assumed office in 2023, urging the leader to prioritize justice and national unity.
During a recent broadcast, Iginla articulated his concerns about Kanu’s continued detention, describing it as not only unjust but also detrimental to the nation’s political landscape and social fabric.
He contended that the situation surrounding Kanu should not be a pawn in political gamesmanship. “The life and freedom of any citizen should never be leveraged for political gain,” he asserted, emphasizing the urgency of the matter.
The clergyman’s comments shed light on the current government’s handling of Kanu’s case, which many believe has been used for political maneuvering rather than grounded in principles of justice. Iginla reflected on his correspondence with Tinubu, revealing that he had reached out immediately after the President took office.
“In my letter, I stated that history would judge his actions favorably if he acted decisively in favor of Kanu’s release,” Iginla noted, suggesting that such a move could enhance the administration’s image and promote lasting peace.
Iginla’s condemnation of the apparent delay in justice was explicit. He described the idea of timing Kanu’s release to coincide with political convenience as profoundly unethical and dangerous. “The notion of waiting for a ‘strategic moment’ to release him undermines the integrity of our democracy,” he warned, urging the government to act now rather than later.
His impassioned plea comes at a time when national unity is perceived as fragile. Iginla argued that failing to grant Kanu his freedom could not only escalate regional tensions but also tarnish the current government’s legacy. “Let him come home. If anything were to happen to him in custody, the fallout would be catastrophic for our nation,” he cautioned, highlighting the high stakes involved.
Iginla concluded his address by challenging the government to exhibit true leadership through fair and humane governance. “Our actions right now will be scrutinized by future generations. We must uphold justice, equity, and human rights,” he stated.
