U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders has delivered a pointed rebuke of Washington’s expanding military posture, warning that raw power must not become a substitute for principle in American foreign policy.
In a statement shared on his verified social media account, the Vermont independent acknowledged the scale of U.S. military dominance but questioned the values guiding its use. “Yes. We have the strongest military in the world. We can dominate other countries and steal their resources,” Sanders wrote. “But is that the kind of imperialist country that the American people want us to be? I don’t think so.”
The remarks come amid intense domestic and international debate following the recent U.S.-led operation in Venezuela, an action the White House has publicly framed as a demonstration of American strength and resolve.
While the administration argues the operation was necessary to protect U.S. interests and restore stability, Sanders’ comments underscore a growing divide in Washington over whether such interventions reflect national security imperatives or an overreach of power.
Sanders has long positioned himself as a critic of what he describes as “endless wars” and interventionism driven by economic or geopolitical advantage rather than international law. His latest statement resonates with progressive lawmakers and activists who fear that celebrating military supremacy risks normalising coercive foreign policy and undermining the rules-based order.
