Security strategist and counterterrorism expert, Steve Okwori, has criticized the Zamfara State government for prioritizing lavish infrastructure projects while the state remains under siege by violent criminal groups.
In a viral interview clip aired on ARISE TV and widely shared on social media on Monday, January 5, 2026, Okwori questioned the decision to invest ₦182 billion in airport and road construction while the region continues to suffer relentless attacks by bandits and terrorists.
Okwori made the statement while reacting to the recent massacre in Domo, Borgu Local Government Area of Niger State, where over 40 people were killed and many others abducted by suspected terrorists.
Okwori expressed concern over what he described as “white elephant projects” being pursued in Zamfara, despite the state’s urgent need for security intervention. He said the governor has a unique opportunity to collaborate with the Minister of State for Defense, who hails from Zamfara, to address the crisis more effectively.
He said, “We have a governor that is in Zamfara, carrying out or embarking on white elephant projects, building airports, constructing roads to the tune of 182 billion naira, when Zamfara is being confronted with bandits, terrorism, and all that. Fortunately for the governor, he has one of their industrious sons, who is the Minister of State for Defense. I think that he should work in synergy with the man.”
