We Won’t Accept A Governance System Without Sharia Which Has Nothing To Do With Christians-Danmaliki

Aminu Danmaliki, a traditional titleholder in Bauchi State, has dismissed claims that Sharia law in Northern Nigeria poses a threat to Christians or their religious freedom. He emphasized that the Islamic legal system is strictly for Muslims and does not interfere with the rights of non-Muslims.

During a press briefing shared by PUNCH on Tuesday December 9 2025, Danmaliki addressed the controversy surrounding recent efforts by some Christian activists to discredit Sharia law before the United States Congress. He described the move as a deliberate attempt to reignite outdated fears and stir religious tension in the country.

Danmaliki stated that similar accusations had been made in the past, including claims of religious persecution, but those efforts failed to gain international traction due to a lack of credible evidence. He insisted that Sharia law is constitutionally recognized in Nigeria and remains a vital part of governance for Muslims in the North.

He warned that misrepresenting Sharia as a threat to Christians is both misleading and dangerous. According to him, Muslims in Nigeria will never accept a system of governance that excludes Sharia, as it is deeply rooted in their faith and identity.

According to him, “Let it be known that we Muslims shall never accept a governance system in Nigeria without Sharia, which has nothing to do with Christians and is fully recognised by the Nigerian Constitution.”
