Fresh details have emerged regarding the deepening rift between the Rivers State House of Assembly and the executive arm of government, following revelations by the Assembly’s spokesperson, Enemi George, about a dramatic encounter involving state lawmakers and executive authorities.
George made the disclosure during an interview on Channels Television, where he recounted a tense episode that unfolded during a meeting convened in Abuja, which lawmakers had been led to believe was aimed at resolving the ongoing disagreements between the legislature and the state government.
According to him, the invitation was presented as an opportunity for frank, balanced, and constructive engagement that would help ease tensions and chart a path toward reconciliation.
He explained that members of the Rivers State House of Assembly traveled to the nation’s capital with the expectation that the meeting would be neutral in nature, transparent in process, and focused solely on addressing outstanding issues affecting governance in the state. However, events at the venue reportedly took an unexpected and unsettling turn.
Recounting the incident, George said the lawmakers were taken aback upon gaining access to the meeting room. “When we were taken to Abuja for a meeting, we were surprised. They opened the door, and the people from the presidency were there. Then we saw Fubara. Almost all the members got angry and walked out,” he stated.
According to the Assembly spokesperson, the presence of individuals associated with the presidency, alongside Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara, came as a shock to many of the legislators.
He noted that the development instantly altered the mood of the gathering, transforming what was expected to be a conciliatory dialogue into a moment of heightened suspicion and frustration.
George explained that several lawmakers viewed the setup as inappropriate and disrespectful to the autonomy of the legislative arm of government.
He said the lawmakers believed the arrangement undermined the principle of separation of powers and suggested an attempt to exert undue influence on the Assembly rather than foster mutual understanding.
He further noted that the sudden appearance of executive figures at the meeting created the impression that the lawmakers had been lured into an ambush, rather than invited to a sincere effort at conflict resolution.
This perception, he said, was what ultimately triggered the decision by many members to leave the meeting in protest.
