Rivers State House of Assembly lawmaker and Spokesperson Honourable Enemi George has disclosed that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu dispatched sole administrator Ibok Ete Ibas to negotiate with assembly members during the state’s emergency rule period.
Speaking in an interview with Channels TV, George recounted the assembly’s firm position during the initial mediation attempt. “Let me tell you something: during the state of emergency, the President sends the Administrator to interface with the House of Assembly. And then the members of the Assembly told Ibas—that was the first and only time I sat with Ibas—that, ‘Sir, go back and tell the President we love him and, we respect him. But if he brings Siminalayi Fubara back, the 27 of us will resign. Let him run the state. Let him be governor. Let there be no problems,'” he said.
The lawmaker revealed that Ibas relayed their message to the President, prompting direct Presidential intervention through representatives who summoned the assembly members to Abuja for a crucial meeting.
George described the tense atmosphere when they arrived at the meeting venue and discovered Governor Fubara’s presence. According to the spokesperson, nearly all members became angry and attempted to leave upon seeing the governor.
However, FCT Minister Nyesom Wike intervened decisively to prevent the walkout. “The Minister of FCT walked in and locked us in and said, ‘This is the last day of this thing. We must settle,'” George revealed that Wike forced the parties to remain together until they reached an agreement that temporarily resolved the political crisis.
